933 Curry Chicken in a bun - in Singapore

It's been some time since I was in Singapore. During my recent visit, I brought some colleagues to 933 in East Coast Road. This food outlet serves Curry Chicken in a Bun as a house specialty. In addition, they also have Curry Mutton (taste great and it does not have the muttony smell that many outlets have), Curry Prawns and a host of other food. This is the famous Golden Pillow Restaurant of Singapore.

Just like many businesses in Singapore, they also have a website and customers could place their orders online. I was pleasantly surprised during this visit as they have now relocated the production of the buns to a central site in Katong. The outlet at East coast road had been upgraded to serve steamboat, and a carp dish. There was Fish Head curry, Loh Sang (a dish that is normally available during Chinese new Year (and now all year round at 933) and a few varieties of dishes featuring parts of the carp.

Since there was only 4 of us that day, we could only savor a Curry Chicken bun, a fish skin kerabu, a tantalizingly fried fritters (where the honey coated bananas were really delish).

I know I have blogged about the chicken before, but it is still a worthwhile eat. So this time, I'll show you how the bun is prepared from the time it reaches the table until it is ready to eat. The curry chicken is first cooked before it is wrapped in food quality plastic and then wrapped again with grease proof paper. Then it is wrapped with the bread dough and placed in the oven. The temperature of the oven is hot enough to bake the bread, but will not melt the plastic.

When served, you get a big bread bun, which is then dissected into 8 pieces. the packet of curry chicken inside is unwrapped (nice and warm) and the edge of the plastic and grease proof paper folded to form a bowl of curry chicken. The bread is then torn up to dip into the curry and eaten

YUMMY!!

Denai Alam house - almost ready

Rain in the past couple of weeks when I was away in Singapore had slowed down renovation works. I thought the painting of the walls would have been completed by now and it was just a matter of some minor touch ups here and there.

Still , much progress has been made. The grills are finally in. Shirley managed to convince her brother from Bahau to do this (albeit reluctantly on the part of her brother).

I am happy with the colors that I have chosen for the walls. ICI Waterfall color is not a common color to use and I kind of liked it after having used it in my current house. My house is the one in green.

Ready soon!!!

update on eve of Merdeka

What a difference in atmosphere between Singapore and Malaysia!! I was in Singapore for 2 weeks. And this was after August 9th had already passed, i.e., independence day for Singapore. You can see flags draped on every HDB flat, housing and streets. I also managed to catch the National Day address by their Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

He used the occasion to use technology to show his audience the new world of internet. He had his mobile phone camera activated, streamed the video to his blog and showed that to the audience in his address. Instantaneous. Like he said - maybe the world's first political video blog!! BG Lee came across as articulate, intelligent and up to date on current issues, technologies and developments.

Contrast that to Malaysia. On the eve of the 51st Merdeka (National day), there is nary a national flag flying anywhere. Only an occasional blurb on the idiot box about how great it is that we are celebrating Merdeka. There is a dampener felt in the air.

The prime minister (not in caps on purpose) just made his budget presentation yesterday. He is obviously still in denial about the current political scenario. His political party had advocated racism during the recent by election that was won by Anwar Ibrahim (who has since been nominated as the opposition leader of parliament). After 50 years of molly coddling, the malays in UMNO still don't get it - racism is NOT the way to go. Beggar thy neighbor is NOT the way to go.

Idiots!!

Singapore - week of 18th Aug 08

On almost every night, there was something arranged, either with my colleagues or my relatives. One of those nights, some colleagues (both Singapore and Malaysia) decided on dinner in Geylang. As the taxi made it's way there, one can see many stalls selling durians (lots of it) and other local fruits. More than you would see in any street in KL or PJ!

Our Singaporean counterparts recommended a place known for it's claypot rice.Geylang Clay Pot rice even has it's own website! Their reputation was so good that you had to make a reservation or run the risk of waiting 45 minutes or more for your pot of claypot rice to appear.
There were 9 of us and we made reservations for 2 pots of rice. I have to admit that they were good. The picture above was how the rice was served to us. The picture below is what happens after the whole pot has been mixed before serving.I polished off 4 bowls of rice during the meal. We had also ordered numerous other dishes. They looked good in the lighted boards on the wall. Burp!!

The night continued!! We then took a slow leisurely walk to another street to look for durians. Along the way, we bumped into a colleague from Malaysia who was on leave and enjoying dinner with her friend. There were also a lot of street walkers plying their trade that night. In case you do not know, Geylang is a noted red light district in Singapore. We finally settled on one of the durian stalls along the street. I picked 3 large durians (Mao Shan Wang - literally Mountain Cat King). They were good BUT pricey. As Jayson noted, that must have been the most expensive durians he had - S$160 for the 3 fruits!!. Ouch!!

On another day, I was also tasked with getting a going away present for Geraldine (of Business Center). I walked around for a few hours trying to decide on something whimsical and attractive. I finally settled on this piece of hand crafted whatchamacallit. Good Luck and Best Wishes to you Geraldine, in your future endeavors.

Last but not least, my brother-in-law has managed to make his way to Singapore and is now bunking with me until 28th Aug.

I think I am over shopping. I'll have to ask Stephen to help bring some of the stuff back for me. This is all Vincent Wong's fault. He wanted a particular printer that was only available in Singapore. Darn box weighs 10kg.

Vincent - you owe me (and not just for the printer).

Badminton - Singapore vs Malaysia (LSCA)

Just a short update on something that seems to have gone thru D grapevine. We have 4 Malaysians in Singapore these 2 weeks attending training in our Singapore training center (along with 7 from India and 2 from Thailand). On Tuesday, we joined our counterparts in Singapore for a friendly game of badminton after work. On the Singapore side, we had Roger Koh, touted as a "good" player. They also had many regulars who could supposedly whup the pants off the Malaysians. When it was all over and done with, Malaysian side won 2-0. I think it was a bit hard for Roger to understand how he could have lost to D Fat one - aka ME!!

Next Tuesday - rematch!!

Chooi and Stephen's visit - part 1

Finally...... after more than 10 years, Stephen and Chooi is back in Malaysia for another visit (their second in infinity!). The last time my younger sister came back, we were having a bad case of the HAZE. Malaysia was suffering from El Nino with water shortages. Anwar was sacked and charged with sodomy. And Commonwealth games were just around the corner.

This time, we did have slight haze (many times better than 10 years ago). NO water shortages (touch wood and knock head). And of course we have another sodomy charge against Anwar. Some things never change!

I had invited both Stephen and Chooi over for Madeline's wedding, but they could not make it, even though I was paying for their return tickets from London. This month, August, another event was coming up - mum's birthday. So I extended my invitation again. This time, they were available. It also happens to be Stephen's birthday on 18th.

Stephen arrived on 12th morning. Good flight and he looked almost rested. After taking him on a whirlwind tour of KL and PJ - recce my new house in Denai Alam, dropped into the office, dropped into Shirley's house, popped into 1 Utama - he was pooped for the day.

Next day, I took Mum and him up to Cameron Highlands for a 3 days 2 nights trip. The highlands almost behaved themselves. Nights got as cold as 15 degrees and it only drizzled in the late afternoons when we were resting after morning trips to various places. Stephen was really "fatt far tin" - literally meaning mad about the flowers. Almost every place we went to with flora and fauna - he would be exploring almost every corner, identifying many that he thought could not have existed in Malaysia. There was some differences in how the flora and fauna grows in Camerons compared to England.

For example, he was asking one farm - how many crops of strawberries could they harvest from a plant before the strawberry plant died. Apparently in England - only 1 harvest. That's more due to the weather than anything else. It took a while to convey to him that the strawberry plants in Camerons gives and continues to give throughout the year since we do not have Winter to contend with. He certainly enjoyed the trip and so did Mum. In all her visits, she had always been stuck in the kitchen preparing food for the family that brought her up there.

This time, she got to see a tea bush for the first time in her life. While we were buying honey from the farm near to Equatorial Hotel, she had a very lively conversation with the owner - a youngish looking 60 year old who told us that the business was started by her grandparents and passed down the generations. She swore she recognized me from previous visits. Thank goodness that I chose the straight and steady path in life. Any other path, and I would be the most recognizable wanted person around.

Chooi flew in only on 16th. She had a bad flight. Plane took off late and just when they were about to land, some idiot who probably drank too much vomited over her and a couple of other passengers. By the time she cleaned up and got to her bags, some gifts she had packed in her baggage had been pilfered!! I was waiting at the arrival hall for almost 3 hours!! I called up Malaysian Airlines to make sure she had boarded. I called Immigration to see if they were holding any UK citizens in there (she has taken up UK citizenship after marriage). I went to the security office to see if they would allow me a security pass to enter to do a search. All to no avail!!.

That night, we had a dinner to celebrate Mum's birthday (as well as Stephen's). Mum kind of liked Jun Kee in Taman Midah. In addition to the usual dishes we ordered (Curry fishhead, steamed fish, Ku Lo yoke and others), we also had sharkfin soup - just for Chooi since she had not had this for ages. As you can see, we polished off almost everything on the table!

After dinner, we adjourned to my house where we had a make-up tea ceremony for Vincent and Madeline. Stephen couldn't figure out what in the world we we doing. He held on to his cup of tea and had to be told to sip the tea - not finish it. Actually Chooi had to be told the same too.

Well, I have to be off to Singapore for business visit for 2 weeks. Stephen will join me from 23rd to 28th. Chooi goes back to London on 21st.

Tired!!

Re-experiencing Studio Ghibli

Having a 10 year old at home (Alex) means that I would frequently be reliving parts of my childhood, though not necessarily at the same age/time continuum. The first time I saw the Anime My Neighbor Totoro must have been in my early teens.

A few months ago, I saw a box set of 4 in 1 movies from Studios Ghibli. So I bought it to let Alex see some of the Anime of some decades ago. I think I must have been drawn to it by the silhouette of Totoro on the box, despite the absence of the show itself in the collection. To my surprise, Alex liked it. I say surprise because his is the age of Disney, Nicktoons and what have you. It was even more surprising when I insisted on playing the DVD on Japanese language with English subtitles. I guess the nuances and emotions conveys better in original language.

The 4 in 1 collection starts off with Spirited Away. The level of details and realism in many of the scenes are astounding - considering that this is Anime! The Cat's Return was also entertaining

The 4 in 1 movie collection was good, but it did not have Totoro My neighbor. So when I saw another box set with 17 movies in it, and it was on sale for HALF PRICE! I bought it without hesitation - Totoro My Neighbor was amongst the collection. I think the movies from Studios Ghibli carries some moral and ethical messages in many of them.

Have fun surfing the net for more info on Studios Ghibli. With the Malaysian Mega sale in full swing now, i think it is relatively easy to get the box sets at a discount.

Denai Alam house - a month and the half later

The Denai Alam house has been undergoing renovations for the past month and the half. The external walls have been completed. Doing the extensions with my neighbor presents a better and more aesthetic look to the whole renovations. If everything proceeds without problems, i guess the renovations should be completed before the end of August. What a mess it is in now. Looks more like a house in a war zone.
So far RM30K has been paid out to the contractor. I still remember in the early 80s, when I renovated and extended a previous house in Taman Melawati, I had extended more than double the buildup that i am doing today. It was also double storey and created a new large bedroom and pushed the wet kitchen all the way to the back. And the cost then, including electrical and everything else was only RM20K. But those were the days when you could get a decent meal for less than RM2.00.

Sigh!
